So in the past couple of months, Tanuki has gained almost a pound, which normally wouldn't be weird because it's winter, except that ALL this weight is in her gut only, and 5 ounces were gained in the last 2 weeks! So we took her in thinking maybe a blockage, except that she's been eating, drinking, pooping, and playing just like normal... We took her to the vet and she does not believe there is any blockage but says her spleen is huge, like HUGE. She was really impressed at how spunky and bright-eyed Tanuki was, and she couldn't think of any reason for such an enlarged spleen except cancer, or maybe fluid in the stomach? So we are taking her in for an ultrasound on Monday, and then we should at least know what it is... Even though it didn't sound like there was much in the way treatments if it was cancer, we'll do it anyway just so we know forsure.
The good news is Tanuki is behaving just like normal and she not appear to be in any type of pain whatsoever because the vet was poking and prodding like crazy and she didn't seem to mind. I just feel bad for her because she is starting to have trouble hauling her huge girth around! She needs help getting into their toybox now, but she looks very cute when she walks because she does this little tail-waddle. :-) I hope that, whatever happens, whether there are treatments or not, we'll be able to get her weight down for her.
But the vet admitted that she didn't know everything about this and was going to do some research. Does anyone have any experience with enlarged spleen?
If anyone has any info, please let me know!
We're taking her for an ultrasound in a couple days, but that will only confirm whether it's cancer or not. We're not really sure what else can be done for her!

I have several with an enlarged spleen. Stinker was the only one we had the spleen removed on. Normally unless it is causing her trouble with eating, doing bathroom details it can be left alone. It is a good idea to have the ultrasound done as it might provide information if there is a cancer development on it. But for the most part, if it is not causing an issue for Tanuki, then let it be. Just a thought.

Oh, can I ask why you decided to remove Stinker's, but not the others? What's a good reason for removal?
Thanks!

Stinker's spleen had to be removed because it was pushing on his intestines and causing problems for him going to the bathroom. It also, was giving him problems eating as there was no room for stomach expansion. After the spleen was taken out, Dr. O had samples sent for analysis, and it was found to be cancerous. I will have to see if I can scan the photo of the spleen to up load it. The spleen was huge.

Wow, ok, thanks. So far Tanuki is not having trouble going to bathroom or eating (phew!), but if it is cancerous that could certainly change.

If is just an enlarge spleen, and not interrupting any functions, I can't see the need for an invasive surgery. Stinker's was causing issues. Keep us posted on how Tanuki is doing.
