My 6 1/2 yr old albino started to develop the signs of adrenal last November with the classic rat tail and then come January time frame the hair started to grow back after I switched the food to Evo. Now his tail is going rat like again, he is getting sluggish, and his benign mast cell tumors are popping up more regularly. Any suggestions or should I just ride this rough patch out? |

Has he been put on any meds for his adrenal?

I would definitely get on it with looking into treatment. First of all, though, rat tail has nothing to do with adrenal. It is a dermatological condition and if you look carefully, you can see the black heads that are blocking the pores from letting the new hairs come in. My Ruby gets them every summer and grows a good tail in the winter (her whole coat becomes gorgeous after a summer of less than pretty fur).
Second, he's 6-1/2 years old. Sluggish is to be expected somewhat. Is he lazy or exhausted? Does he speed bump a lot?
You do need to check with a vet because on males it can cause pressure on the prostate. More than anything, has he become more aggressive? I'm not talking about chomping you but if you have other ferrets, has he begun to dominate them more? If so, check with your vet about getting a deselorin implant. Even if he's not adrenal, this works as a preventative too.

There are no black heads on his tail and when it first showed he was losing some over his general body. Now the vet did not do a panel to check for adrenal, but I was getting the gut feeling. He has been speed bumping a lot this last week, more so than normal. Before this became a concern again he was just being lazy and still causing regular trouble. He was wrestling with his cage mate a couple times a week, dig where he wasn't supposed to, poke the dog, etc. Now he will spend most of his time in the closet with his tiger stuffy. Even though he wants out, I don't see a lot of him when he is out because he is in the closet. He has not become aggressive at all, just lethargic. Does anyone know a good richmond ferret vet? |

It is normal for a 6 1/2 year old to sleep more. There is a difference in sleeping and being lethargic. As for adrenal gland disease, if he is balding that is one of the signs of the disease. He may lose his appetite, be lethargic, have problems peeing due to an enlarged prostrate. I would have a vet look at him, and either get him on the implant or lupron shot. I do not know of any vet close to the Richmond area, but if you look for ferret rescue shelters in that area, they may be able to recommend a vet for you.

Question about the black heads on the tail, my lil Ava has them and her tail is balding some too. Is it the same as what you were describing? |

Black heads can cause rat tail. It is dirt that is clogging the hair follicles and preventing the hair to grow. You can use an acne cleanser on the tail to help loosen up the black heads to remove them. I use stridex when I can find it.

My Ruby gets rat tail every year. I know when winter is coming by the condition of her tail. Now it is covered with a very fine fur. She's on her way to her beautiful winter coat without any intervention at all.
