I recently took in two, two year old little girl ferrets named jojo and Bea, because their mommy was going away to college. I already had 7. We have never had any problems with the older ones excepting new ones until these two. My little Gizzy who we have had for 4 years and has had 4 ferrets brought in after him is terrorizing the two new little girls. Gizzy has always been playful and welcoming of any new ones that come in. He just rips jojo and bea apart when he sees them. Also our last ferret Bella that we took in is terrorizing them. We know nothing of Bella's history because she was found roaming the streets when we got her but she never fought with any of our others when she came here. We are keeping jojo and bea in another room while gizzy and bella are up then let them out when the other two sleep. Does anyone have any reccomendations on how to get them to leave the little girls alone. Bella will search them out just to hurt them. Does anyone know why they suddenly don't like the new girls?

Okay since I usually just give up and have different play groups this is just something I saw on dog whisperer - let Jojo and Bea sniff Bella's butt. Apparently, the one whose butt gets sniffed will adopt a more submissive attitude. I know it is for dogs but who knows, right? Either way, good luck with this because it can make for a very stressful household.

I read this awhile back in the Ferrets magazine. One thought would be is to give everyone a bath so they have the same scent, the other thought was putting nutrical, ferretvite or ferrettone on the "victims" to enhance the grooming action of the attacker.

I also have separate play groups because of the roughness of the bully boys on the older ferrets. Let us know how it goes.

Cdstickley, have you found anything that has worked to clam things down and stop the attacks yet?

We are having no luck at all. We have to keep Bea and Jojo locked up in my sons room when the others are awake. Bella has even started bullying one of our older ones that she has been around for over a year and never bothered before. Bea is trying to get along with all the other ferrets but Jojo will net let any of them near her because of gizzy and bella. We are not giving up though. We will find peace some how.

I would just keep putting Bea and Jojo with the others, they'll figure it out.

As for Bella, if she's already agitated, she's going to turn that on others. Just keep her and Gizzy away from Bea and Jojo and she should go back to normal soon.

I had the same problem a few years ago when I introduced Ava at 8 months to my other 2 ferrets. She was fine with Jasmine but her and Snowy would fight. What I did was slow introductions. I wouldn't put all 4 in the same room together. What I would do is introduce Bea separately to Bella and then Gizzy and the same with Jojo. Take it slowly and watch them closely. The instant there is any aggression separate them and correct them for the incorrect aggression. It took about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks for Snowy and Ava to get along and now they do everything together. The reason I believe Bella is starting to bully the others she used to get along with is because she probably has a dominant streak and is frustrated she can't get to the girls.

Anita (Weaselmom) had this problem when she brought two girls (Pretty and Pink) into a previously all bachelor pad (Skipper and Simon). It did not go well at all with a lot of stress all the way around. Now they'll tolerate each other but not buddy up. I think it took about a year of them sleeping in side-by-side cages. She still has separate play times for them.

Yeah, it was a total FAIL at integration at my house. It's taken a year and a half for them to be able to sniff each other and NOT attack. They will now sniff and either ignore each other or have a squabble that I will usually have to separate. They are still too stressed around each other to have integrated play times, but it's getting "better"... Good Luck - I tried EVERYTHING that everyone suggested, and if they don't love each other right from the start, it's gonna take many months for them to even be able to tolerate each others' presence. :-(

We currently have 10 fuzzies and the most effective thing I've found is short interactions taking care to put some sort of ferret cologne or vanilla extract on everyones neck, butt and gland areas. They can tell each other apart and we let them get used to each other gradually. Lilo and Peek-a-boo took 7 months to get along but they now tolerate each other. Good Luck
